I had seen wonderful, giant prints at the PhotoPlus event that were created with the Fuji GFX, and with some unbelievable Fuji deals out right now (as of right now you can get the GFX with the 63mm lens (50mm equivalent) or 45mm lens (36mm equivalent) for $1000 off), it peaked my interest on how it would do as a frequently used street camera. Anyways, I also met the Fujifilm representative (Yuta-san) and he gifted me a Fujifilm X100T (no strings attached). It produces a harsh light that has a more gritty feel which fits a certain style of street photography. Firstly, the 27mm is indeed a superb lens for street photography but the X-T1 isn’t the ideal platform for it. I had absolutely no problem walking around with it all day around my neck— no strain, didn’t even feel like it was there. Even the X-T1 can get a little heavy after a while. Also at night if you use the AF-illumination light, the camera autofocuses quite solidly. Street Photography Tokyo the Stills: In the video, I mention that I only have my X100F with me. I shot the camera mostly in “P” mode (“A” on the front lens, and “A” on the shutter dial), and in ISO 1600 in autofocusing mode. I took this excellent little camera to Havana for a week of street photography and I was impressed every step of the way. Thanks, in advance for your help! Today I want to make a few suggestions as to how to set up your Fuji camera for street photography. He has a lot of nice family oriented images so I asked him to talk about his images and his opinion on the Fuji x100s vs x100t since he had both. The Fujifilm X100T retails for around ~$1300 on Amazon. [All images made with the X100t] I want to thank Olivier Duong for allowing me to … Things like high ISO image quality, overall image quality, intuitive control layout, speed, and build quality. But getting into using flash in street photography can be tricky to work out how to use it correctly. His focus is Landscape, Street, and Commercial/Marketing photography. Mark Cohen and Bruce Gilden are two great example of street photographers who have made great use of flash. I use a wrist strap and thumb grip and never have an issue with accidentally dropping or feeling like I might drop the camera. The build quality is excellent, it’s heavy enough to feel like it could withstand minor bumps and bruises however I wouldn’t recommend it since the lens is fixed and if you bust it you’ll have to buy an entirely new camera. I purchased both and use neither. Flash in Street photography is a very useful tool. The camera did a good job of setting the shutter speed/aperture to capture the images I wanted, and I didn’t really find any times that I could blame the camera for not getting the photo I wanted. But of course if you want to be stealthy and prefer black— it is always a solid option too. I don’t see any design flaws in the camera that could become a problem down the road, it looks as though it’s built to last. It is not discussed enough in reviews for street photographers. However, for street photography, I suggest that you consider shooting in Shutter Priority Mode. Fujifilm was generous enough to sponsor my 2 workshops here (a 1-day Conquer your Fear of Shooting Street Photography course, and a 3-day intensive Intermediate/Advanced Street Photography Workshop focused on projects). The X100T has a huge improvement over the X100S in terms of the stiffness of the dials. Put electronic contacts on the lens so the camera would automatically know the conversion lens was on without having to go into the menu. Let me get into some of my more detailed thoughts on the Fujifilm X100T below. It produces a harsh light that has a more gritty feel which fits a certain style of street photography. The Nikon is just too impressive for him so every time I try to take a shot, he just stops doing whatever and I’m thinking that the Fuji would be much more discreet. Hi John, thanks for the review. I’m going to approach this review from a different perspective than my review of the X100S, I’m going to look at this camera from a Street Photographers perspective. The X100T has the same sensor as the X100S (and the X-T1). X100T is very fast and in low light at ISO1600, 3200 is beautifull. Fujifilm are also sponsoring my free talk on street photography (at Gulf Photo Plus this Monday evening at 7pm). Opinioni, caratteristiche tecniche e foto scattate con la Fujifilm X100T, una compatta con sensore APS-C (1.5x) da 16 megapixels prodotta dal 2014 al 2017 (fuori … Personally, I actually prefer to use the EVF (electronic viewfinder) on the X100T, as it is much improved to the X100S. I use a Canon 5dIII and 1Dx – the former is pretty indiscreet on the street (these days anything bigger than a phone get people’s attention) and the latter has never left the studio. This felt instantaneous. He hates spiders. The Fuji X100F is the fourth in Fuji’s line of X100 cameras – the X100, X100S, X100T, and X100F. I have the X100S and considered “upgrading” to the X100T but I’m not sure I can justify the cost vs. new features. Would prefer to have a straight out of camera JPG shots as I would prefer not to post production the photos. If you want to become a better photographer, I recommend you to buy books, not gear. T is very usefull camera, it’s small, fast, make beautifull images and looks retro. If anything, I find that I often have to add a ton of fake grain to make digital photos look grittier— as they look “too clean” straight out of the camera. All of the shots on this page were shot with auto-focus (don’t judge me) and I never missed a shot because focus couldn’t find a lock. They are all “open-source”. Even with the slight delay in waking up (hopefully it’s addressed someday) I would still recommend this camera, the aforementioned workaround renders the problem moot. Examples: 1/125, f5.6, ISO 640 more after the break Disclaimer: I was given a free Fujifilm X100T for this review. Be notified of when new workshops are live here. The best advice I have ever read was this: money can only buy you happiness, as long as you spend it on experiences, NOT material things. Great high-ISO capacities, the best colors I have seen out of a digital camera (the Nikon D800/Canon 5D Mark III also look great). Buying you the new X100T won’t make you a better street photographer. I also shot a lot of really close “street portraits” with the macro mode, which also works quite quickly. I think if are deciding between the black and silver version, I’d actually get the silver version (I think it looks nicer). For me I have shot it all in black and white in RAW, and I shot it consistently at ISO 3200–6400 with no problems. “Let the envy go away and act like a true member of a growing family of photographers”, I say. Fuji X100T seems like the perfect fit. I’m very sensitive to camera power-up and wakeup-speeds and I’m glad that you (uniquely, as far as I know) have looked at this performance aspect. If you turn off the AF-illumination light, it tends to hunt a bit (especially if there isn’t much contrast at night). I felt the camera was too fiddly in my hand, with placement of controls and a slippery, low-profile hand grip that meant it felt quite precarious. If you have a X100T you will love Classic Chrome. I like the idea of just “setting and forgetting” the camera. I have X100T only two days but i shoot many testing photos on ISO 3200-6400 and iam surprised. However, the X-T3 was purely for the small amount of vlogging and was left in the hotel for the vast majority of the time. There are better suited cameras in the Fuji line-up including the X-Pro (of course) and the X-A and X-M. So long story short, 9.5/10 image quality from the X100T. But to sum up, the X100T is an absolute joy to shoot with— little to no stress dealing with shooting in the streets. You need a camera capable of shooting in all of these situations without missing a beat. Still super-light, compact, and even pocketable (if you have big enough pockets). Mark Cohen and Bruce Gilden are two great example of street photographers who have made great use of flash. Some of you have asked what settings I use for street photography. Fujifilm also hit a home-run (at least in my book) by making the menus simpler. It's just what I shoot mostly right now, but the colors on the Fuji … When I tried it in a store, the camera seemed to go into sleep when it was away from the eye and a sensor would turn it back on when I put it up to my eye. I often discuss with my friends about the tips and tricks in all kind of photography fields. The size is probably not such a problem, it’s more the placement of controls, which means that I can’t find a secure to wrap my hand around it. I’m going to include button layout in the “Build Quality” section because it seems right. *Using a thumb grip partially covers the drive button and the wheel below your exposure compensation dial. These settings will hopefully allow you to walk the streets and focus on watching the world and looking for interesting people or interesting scenes to shoot, rather than worrying what your settings are, fumbling around the camera and missing the shot. For Colour: Provia standard is OK. The Fuji X100F is the fourth in Fuji’s line of X100 cameras – the X100, X100S, X100T, and X100F. I wanted to try the camera out, and bring you guys some practical details which would affect shooting the X100T on the streets. Also if you want a more pocketable camera for street photography, I highly recommend the new Ricoh GR (read my review here). Be sure to turn off your auto-focus assist light in the settings if you use this set up. Auto ISO, with a maximum ISO of 3200 and a minimum shutter speed of … I found myself taking shots with the X100T that I would not have attempted with a larger camera, primarily because I was less worried about people reacting to the camera. I had a great time teaching the workshops here in Dubai, and also ended up shooting a lot of personal photos for myself (around 5–6 rolls of medium-format Kodak Portra 400 on my Hasselblad and a Mamiya 7 I borrowed from my friends Imraan and Mo. Therefore I find that you can shoot the X100T at slower shutter speeds (and have sharper images) than the X-T1. If you own a Leica, it is not worth it (or necessary, common you already own a Leica). I burned my fingers on a Panasonic DMC-LX3 a few years back. Furthermore, they don’t attract attention, so people on the street won’t notice you as a “professional” photographer. 1. Although it has a refined design and fairly intuitive menu, the camera’s large number of options and controls can make it overwhelming for new buyers. That’s all…for the moment! However if you love the newest and greatest (and you can afford it) I would say go for the upgrade. For more high ISO image samples you can check out the sample galleries over at DPReview.com. It’s very impressive, I think you’ll be happy. Enter your email address to subscribe to this site and receive notifications of new posts by email. I have a full frame Nikon, but feel like it’s too bulky to bring for street shots on everyday bases. Also things to consider: for the price of $1,300 you can afford a round-trip ticket to somewhere in the world, buy 33 amazing photography books (assuming each book was around $40), go on a road trip somewhere (related article on how to do an American road trip), book a photography workshop, and invest it in experiences.
